Traditional French Polishing is a shellac based wood finishing technique.
By applying many thin coats of shellac the French polisher is able to achieve a very high gloss finish, with deep and rich colour as well as a toughened protective surface.
French polishing can be a very long and repetitive process. The typical French polishing wood finish is achieved through a combination of different rubbing motions and layers applied over considerable amount of time.
Historically French polishing was used on mahogany and other expensive woods, and was considered to give the best possible finish.
Although French polishing still remains one of the most effective and striking wood finishing techniques, many modern wood polishing and finishing techniques have now been developed which are less labour intensive than French polishing. Thankfully, the result is a much broader choice of wood finishing options.
